Welcome To Year 2

A warm welcome to Year 2! We are a hardworking, enthusiastic and friendly group that want to succeed in our learning!

Meet the Year Group Teachers, Miss Robson…

Meet the Year Group Teaching Assistant, Mrs Humphrey…

Hello, I’m Leanne Humphrey. I have been working at Oxclose for the past 12 years! Throughout my time with the school, I have worked in all year groups and have enjoyed them all. I am very experienced in Year 2.

Yearly Curriculum Overview

Spring – Termly Curriculum Information for Parents/Carers

Autumn – Termly Curriculum Information for Parents/Carers

Favourite School Meal Day

It was our favourite meal day today! We had a vote and most of us chose pizza, waffles and chocolate cake! Mrs Hall decorated the dinner hall and we came down earlier than everyone else to eat our dinner. It was delicious!

Science Investigation

We’ve been learning about an inventor called Mary Anderson who invented the windscreen wipers. We looked at the work she did linking to our current learning of everyday materials. We carried out an investigation to identify which material would be most suitable to make a windscreen wiper and we discussed the properties materials should have for the task. We worked as a group and tested paper, rubber, metal and fabric, then recorded our findings. We discovered rubber was the best material to use because it’s waterproof, strong and reusable.

Beamish Visit

In Year 2 we’ve been learning about the Victorians, specifically what it was like to be a Victorian child. We visited Beamish Museum to learn more and had a fantastic time! We had a Victorian lesson, went down the mine and had a good look around some houses from this period.
We now know people lived completely differently if they were rich or poor and some children didn’t even go to school at all!

Year 2 have really enjoyed learning about Diwali – the festival of light. We learned about the story of Rama and Sita in English and had time to re-tell the story and write a short diary entry from Sita’s perspective.
We made our own salt-dough candle holders and decorated them by making patterns and using colourful paint and sequins. We also made some colourful Diwali cards to hand out to our friends and family over half term. We’ve really enjoyed learning about another religion and learning about how other people might celebrate at different times in the year!

Our first half term in Year 2

Here are a few photos of our first half term in Year 2. We’ve had such a busy time learning about place value, writing our own versions of the Three Little Pigs and we had a great time at the Harvest Festival! We’ve worked so hard and learned so much already!

Visit to Washington Wetland Centre

Year 2 had a fantastic day out at Washington Wetland Centre. We met Vince and he told us lots of interesting facts about the otters, flamingos and ducklings in the Duckery.

We worked with a partner to pond dip and see what we could catch – Mahmoud and Leo caught a pond snail and some pond worms!

After that, we watched the otters eat their dinner and learned about their natural habitat in the wild. We even had some time to play on the park at the end of the day before we came home!

World Book Day

We had a great time on World Book Day! We all came to school dressed as a character from our favourite book. Year 2 read with Reception buddies and had story time with Mrs Butler. We all enjoyed the performance of Wolf On Trial – we thought Mr Wolf was innocent!

Using Numicon in Maths

We enjoyed using Numicon to help us count. We weren’t allowed to look in the bag so we had to feel around to find the twos. Once we found all of the twos we made equal groups and wrote number sentences.

Washington Library

Year 2 were invited to visit Washington Library. We had a great time exploring new books, reading with friends and listening to a story from Elaine. We learned all about the Library and had a good look around – we can’t wait to go back!

World Book Day

Y2 had an amazing World Book Day this year!
We dressed up as a character from our favourite book and brought the book in to read and show. We looked at Julia Donaldson books and voted for our favourite – we made graphs and could see our favourite was The Smartest Giant in Town. We also designed a front cover for a book and coloured it in.

In PSHE we have been looking at the topic – Money Matters.  We did a hot seating activity of the rich and famous and asked the question, Does money make us happy?

That History Bloke

That History bloke visited year 2 at school to talk about ‘The Great Fire of Gateshead’. The children really enjoyed acting, listening to historic stories and dressing up.

We had a follow up trip the week after to The Quayside, Betty Surtees House and St Mary’s Church.

Roald Dahl 100 Day

We really enjoyed Roald Dahl 100 Day in year 2. It was great to see everyone dressed as some of the much loved characters from Roald Dahl’s stories. We had fun following instructions to make Mr Twit’s hairy scary beard cakes. We also designed our own scrumdiddlyumptious chocolate bars.
